day 10: i'm back...behind...doin' day 10 (animal) late

Yeesh! You'd think going on a mini-vacay with the intent and excitement of taking pictures and flexing my small but growing photography muscles would mean I'd stay on track with this challenge. Er...guess not. In fact, I took just a handful of pictures on only 1 day!

Anyway, over the weekend we were in the DC area. Granted we were there just two weeks prior for Memorial Day weekend...but I didn't get to enjoy my love's company much on that trip. Plus, I had seeing some of the sights on my "bucket list" before leaving this part of the country.

Couple of interesting facts about the Washington Monument:

1) It was created roughly around the Civil War time frame.

My love and I were discussing that it just doesn't seem to reflect that time period to us...that we would've guessed a totally different time period.

2) It truly is two different colors despite coming from the same rock query. (You can see the line where the color differentiation is almost at the top of the flag pole in the photo below.) The construction of this monument was halted during the Civil War and then restarted post-Civil War, which is where the color differentiation is. Interesting, huh?

I've been wanting to see the Lincoln Memorial again for quite some time. There were a ton of stairs, it was hot, and there were a ton of people there. Kinda hard to really soak it in and reflect, but still thankful I got to see it again.

I love the detail in columns. The stained glass above is also gorgeous.

The kiddo was wiped out. I think the heat also helped put the kiddo to sleep as she is simply not typically one of those kids who will pass out and sleep...never has been.

As for my "animal" assignment for the day, I was curious what I would get. Had I been home, I'm sure it would've been one of the pups or a photo of one of the baby rabbits that's been eating what's left of our pansies. Had we been living in Alaska already, I'd like to think I would've been successful in getting a picture of a moose since they seem to be so commonly seen around town (from what I'm hearing). But nope, I was in Washington DC. So I had to be on the lookout for city animals.

This bird was a tease. They were totally posing and showing me great pictures I could capture. But when it was time to actually get the picture, they'd hop out of the frame or do something else to mess up the shot. Goobers. It's like they knew and were just playing with me.

This one took me a while to get and really isn't exactly what I was hoping for, but its the best that I got. A female mallard swimming in the cool water of the WWII memorial. It was really serene--well, until Marine One flew by. Then it was kinda noisy.

I'll probably be playing catch up for a few days this week as I'm just kinda wiped out from our short vacation. It was a bit of a tough weekend with the kiddo who was really anything but sweet a few times.

{day 9: fresh fruit
day 11: sihlouette}
