day 17: i got me some 'bokeh'

Photobucket

I'll be honest, last fall when I broke my camera's lens, I was kinda excited. It finally meant that if I wanted to use my camera, I had to buy another lens...and if I was going to buy another lens I may as well actually splurge and buy one that I had on my wish list. Enter in the 50mm with a 1.8f.

Call me super excited the day it arrived last November.

Why did I want this lens? Because it could go lower than my 3.5f on the old lens which meant a lot more play with depth of field enabling me to really have a bunch of fun with bokeh.

Well...it ended up not working quite like I had envisioned.

Turns out I had an issue or two that I finally figured out--today! I guess you could say I found the key and unlocked this lens's beautiful magic, all while walking around my current hometown's downtown to capture some memorable places and crossing off some bucket list pictures.

What were these "issues"?

1) For whatever reason, putting this lens on the camera made me revert back to my old-school film loaded Canon train of thought that I used in my college photography course...having to manually turn the ring on the lens to change appeture. My dSLR doesn't let me do that even though the lens has that. So I was unable to play and change the appeture. Until today that is and I had a "doh!" Homer Simpson moment.

2) Really, this lens does much better going full-on manual mode.

I finally got some great shots out of this lens and I'm now super excited to play with it again.
