Semi-last minute, we decided to go on a mini family vacation up to
Fairbanks. Its a trek just shy of 400 miles, takes about 6 1/2 hours,
and has very few towns between. Oh, and its a two lane highway for the
majority of the trip and surprisingly very few cars (or maybe its not so
surprising considering its Alaska in the non-touristy season). But for the lack of towns, gas stations, and most importantly bathrooms, the scenery more than made up for it. Both the drive up and back were gorgeous with clear sunny skies, so we got quite the visual feast of Denali (aka: Mt. McKinley) and all the other mountain ranges that we passed.
It was a great trip filled with some fun stories of trying to get a 3 year old who had to "go" really bad on the side of the road (remember, not many places to stop), listening to the Les Mis soundtrack and other good memory-filled music, finally working on a sewing project I've been aching to start, and most importantly good quality time together as a family.
We relished every minute of it. Okay, maybe not so much the few tantrums the kiddo had...but really, even those were few.
