project 52:10 | a very Alaska weekend

Photobucket
Last weekend was another one of those, "Wow, we totally live in Alaska!" kind of weekends.
Just after Thanksgiving last year we were at the Anchorage Christmas tree lighting ceremony (which was magical by the way) and we met a young family that had moved here from New Jersey a few years prior.  Since we're recent transplants from the east coast as well, we had some things in common which prompted our discussion.

Anyway, they told us that the month of March is when things really start to get fun here.  The temps outside would be much more reasonable, there would be plenty of snow to enjoy playing in (although this year is a wee bit different as we're only 4 inches shy of breaking the all-time snow fall record in one winter season--which ends June 1st), and most notable...the days would be getting longer.
We really are experiencing beautifully longer days and such a rapid increase of daylight.  We're gaining about 6 minutes a day, which doesn't sound like much until you realize that every 10 days or so we're gaining an hour.  Seriously, one hour people!  It really does make an incredible difference.

So even though we have mind-boggling massive piles of snow and looks nothing like spring is anywhere near and I'm hearing about spring hitting friends down in the 'lower 48,' I, like so many others, feel spring creeping in.

So all this to say (little tangent) that we had a pretty awesome time last weekend enjoying some very Alaskan events.  We started out the crazy busy weekend with my love participating in a curling tournament with some folks from the squadron.  The next day we had the opportunity to watch a piece of the Iditarod action which is an annual sled dog race covering approximately 1,049miles in about 9-15 days.  Throw in a couple of birthday celebrations, another decent snow, watching a few rounds of "running with the reindeer" in downtown Anchorage, and a baby shower and you can say we were most definitely exhausted and needed Monday to recoup.  Of course my love didn't get to rest since he had to go to work...but the kiddo and I stuck around the house and I got a little bit of sanity back as I cleaned up the clutter.
