project 52:4 | alaska awesome-ness

There's a saying here in Alaska that I've heard a few times since arriving that I really like.

"There's no such thing as 'bad weather' just bad gear."

Its good advice to take in considering winter snows sweep in early, in October, and don't head out until May. To help keep a positive attitude about winter, its just about essential to go outdoors despite the dark, cold, and snow. Even when its below zero.

So last Friday I went to pick up my love from the airport as he was coming back from Arctic Survival near Fairbanks. If you're wondering what that entailed, lets just say camping in the woods in a "snow cave" of sorts in -30+ degree weather for a couple of nights. Believe me, I felt a little guilty sleeping in my flannel pajamas, tucked in my nice warm bed outfitted with flannel sheets and a few layers of quilts.

Anyway, after picking him up from the airport, we headed out to a local eatery with some friends. Parked right next to us was this car with a bike with massively wide snowtires mounted on it. Strapped onto the bike itself, were a set of snowshoes. I couldn't help but get a kick out the sight of it. There's a bunch of snow on the ground and this person is obviously refusing to allow their passions hibernate. Awesome.

  1. That quote about bad weather vs. bad gear is so funny! My Project 52 this week was about "remembering our angels" aka my grandparents. Thanks for linking up again this week!
